Резюме: The results of Bulgarian students in the conducted international studies PISA and TIMSS show a decreasing trend. After 2006, the share of Bulgarian students with achievements below the critical threshold increased, with the most significant decrease being reported in the field of natural sciences. According to PISA data for the survey conducted in 2018, the average score of Bulgarian students (424 points) decreased by 22 points compared to the survey conducted in 2015 (446 points). The research also shows another very disturbing fact – the average result of Bulgarian students in natural sciences, which is 424 points, is significantly below the average result of the OECD countries, which is 489 points. The tendency of decrease of the results of Bulgarian students causes serious concerns and necessitates the search and discovery of teaching methods leading to an increase in students’ interest in natural sciences and in their results.

The article presents the results of a nationwide survey in which 65 teachers participated. The study aims to establish what the main criteria are for choosing methods used by teachers to build natural science literacy among students. The research was conducted through an online questionnaire with 8 questions of different types.

The results show that teachers apply different criteria when choosing a method. Most often, a certain method is chosen because of its effectiveness and the engagement of the students that it provokes. Some of the teachers share that they do not know the technology of a number of interactive methods.
