EQUALITY IN EDUCATION: ANTINOMIC FIELDS OF SCIENTIFIC DISCOURSE

Abstract. The article examines the problem of equality in education through the prism of the basic theoretical and conceptual approaches. The evolution of scientific discourse concerning various aspects of equality is presented. The central focus of the author’s attention is related to the analysis of the advantages and limitations of the „weak“ definition of equality, perceiving the nature of education based on the competitive-oriented social perspective and assuming equal opportunities for participation in the competitive system for access to better and more prestigious education, and „strong“ interpretation that assumes that every child has equal chances to acquire knowledge and develop its intellectual potential.
