Abstract: The publication presents an approach to building competencies for developing computer games in Computer Modeling among future teachers from the specialties Pedagogy of Physics and Informatics and Pedagogy of Mathematics and Informatics. The publication was provoked by the need for future teachers to become familiar with the theory of computer games during their studies at university. They should be prepared to create such games, realizing the advantages of using them when teaching primary and junior high school students in the basic level of education where Computer Modeling training takes place. The creation of computer games by the would-be teachers is carried out with the aim of “learning through game development”. With this, future teachers acquire skills to use the toolkit of programming environments at a higher level.
Ideas for programming fun games in the Scratch programming environment and in the EduBlocks environment for the Micro:bit programmable device are explored. The result of programming such games leads to the building of competencies for using: one’s own characters and sets; compound condition branch operators; cyclic structures; variables; arithmetic operators; character cloning; management through various events, including messaging. Students are introduced to the elements of game theory: game mechanics; game thinking; motivated learning; incentives; and game-based programming learning approaches. Through the creation of computer games, students’ creative activity is stimulated and competencies are formed for generating and implementing ideas for computer games in visual programming environments – competencies that are necessary for their upcoming professional realization.
