Abstract: Stress and the syndrome of professional burnout represent serious risks to the mental health of specialists working in the field of education. They are associated with high levels of emotional and physical exhaustion, a reduced sense of job satisfaction, and difficulties in maintaining effective professional relationships. Over the past two decades, the burnout syndrome has become the subject of extensive research; however, despite this growing body of studies, there is still no unified solution for its effective prevention and management.
The relevance of this problem is justified by several factors. First, the educational system in Bulgaria continues to develop under conditions of limited resources and ongoing institutional challenges. Second, a European study highlights that in 2016 only 8.41% of teachers who had begun working in schools remained in the profession by their third year (Bulgaria: Teaching Workforce Developments and Recommendations, World Bank, 2020). The high staff turnover and the insufficient support mechanisms for newly appointed teachers reveal a clear need for targeted programs aimed at staff retention. This issue concerns not only teachers and educators but also a wide range of other professionals working in educational institutions, such as childcare educators, psychologists, resource teachers, educational counselors, speech therapists, etc.
The present article aims to provide a theoretical analysis of the problem, focusing on the Bulgarian and European contexts and integrating contemporary scientific research findings.
Keywords: Professional stress, burnout syndrome, stress among professionals working in the educational sector, work environment.
